International flight security
New Zealand Government’s aviation security regulations restrict passengers from carrying certain items through security screening and onto aircraft. For more information on what you can and cannot bring on a flight, refer to the Civil Aviation Authority of New Zealand.
Prohibited items
Certain items are not permitted in carry-on baggage for safety and security reasons. These prohibited items include sporting goods, utensils, tools, and other items with sharp points or edges capable of injuring someone. If you are unsure whether an item is prohibited, check with your airline or leave it at home.
Passengers are required to surrender prohibited items before boarding a flight. Neither the airline nor Wellington International Airport is obliged to store or return surrendered prohibited items. Refer to the Aviation Security Service for more information.
Weapons
Weapons of any kind are not permitted to be carried on you or in your carry-on bag and onto an aircraft. Weapons include but are not limited to:
- firearms of all types, including pistols, revolvers, rifles,and shotguns
- signal flare pistols and start pistols
- bows, crossbows and arrows
- harpoon guns and spear guns
- slingshots and catapults
- toy guns, replicas and imitation firearms
- component parts of firearms
- compressed air and C02 guns, including pistols, pellet guns, and rifles.
Dangerous goods
Dangerous goods are not allowed anywhere on an aircraft because they may be explosive, flammable, magnetic, caustic and are generally too dangerous to be taken on board. Dangerous goods include but are not limited to:
- devices for shocking, such a stun guns, tasers and stun batons
- animal stunners
- disabling chemicals, gases and sprays, such as mace, pepper or capsicum spray
- objects with sharp points or edges
- scissors
- ice axes and ice picks
- razor blades and box cutters
- knives
- martial arts equipment
- swords and sabres
- crowbars
- drills, drill bits and cordless portable power drills
- screwdrivers, chisels
- saws and cordless power saws
- blow torches
- bolt guns and nail guns
- baseball, softball and cricket bats
- clubs and batons
- ammunition
- blasting caps
- detonators and fuses
- replica or imitation explosive devices
- mines, grenades and other explosive military stores
- pyrotechnics, including fireworks
- dynamite, gunpowder and plastic explosives.
