People of the airport - Graham Rock
Congratulations to our friend and colleague Graham Rock (‘Rocky’), Crew Chief with the Wellington Airport Fire Service who recently celebrated his 30th anniversary here. We asked him about his time here:
“Like many children I wanted to be a firefighter when I grew up. However I was also interested in flying and had my fixed wing private pilot licence by the time I was 21, and then started as a Rescue Firefighter at Hamilton Airport in 1982 before coming to Wellington Airport in 1994.
“A typical day for me can involve attending emergencies and carrying out training with the rest of the crew. We test and check our vehicles and equipment, train and usually try to squeeze in a gym workout some time during our 12-hour shifts.
“The best thing about being here is the close-knit team of firefighters and operating within the dynamic aviation environment. Going to sea for marine training on the two rescue vessels is a highlight for me as well.
“The Wellington Airport team is a great group of people and probably because of that it’s a great company to work for. I’ve been here 30 years and I’m still enthusiastic about the job.”
