Lower Hutt celebrates local heroes at 2024 Community Awards

The 2024 Wellington Airport Regional Community Awards for Hutt City were presented at the Lower Hutt Volunteer Awards held on Thursday evening at the Lower Hutt Town Hall.

The Wellington Airport Regional Community Awards recognise the service provided by volunteer community groups across six categories, celebrating their collective contributions to society, with a winner and runner-up announced for each category.

“Volunteers are a driving force behind positive change in our city. In their own ways, they’ve helped build a stronger, more vibrant community in Te Awa Kairangi ki Tai Lower Hutt.” said Mayor Campbell Barry.

The Supreme Award winner was MIRO, an entirely volunteer organisation, working in partnership with Greater Wellington Regional Council to restore the forest and lake ecosystems in East Harbour Regional Park.

Wellington Airport chief executive Matt Clarke said the airport was proud to celebrate the outstanding work of community groups in Hutt City over the previous 12 months.

“These groups do amazing and selfless work to help others in the community and thoroughly deserve recognition for this,” he said.

“This year is extra special given we’re celebrating the 20th anniversary of these awards.

“Congratulations to all the winners, and best of luck for the Regional Community Awards finals later this year.”
