Ōrongomai Marae come out top in Upper Hutt Community Awards
22 Jul 2021
Last night Ōrongomai Marae were announced as Upper Hutt’s Supreme Award winners in the 2021 Wellington Airport Regional Community Awards.
Ōrongomai Marae is a community urban-based marae in Upper Hutt that provides for all iwi away from their u-kaipo. A hub of activity and support for the community, the marae provides many services including health, social work, Kohanga Reo, Marae based training and Te Ataarangi Te Reo Maori classes.
In response to the Covid-19 lockdown in 2020, Ōrongomai Marae took a leading role in providing care and support to the wider community, proving kai packages and cleaning and sanitising products and other support to keep whanau and tamariki safe and well.
Wellington International Airport, Wellington Community Trust, and the five local councils come together to recognise the work carried out by community group volunteers in the wider Wellington region.
The winning community groups from Upper Hutt will join winners from around the region for the award finals in November.
