Regular construction and maintenance works are undertaken within the airport, including:

  • Pavement construction and resurfacing
  • General maintenance works to the runway/taxiway infrastructure
  • Capital work projects such as new/replacement buildings
  • Lighting installation and maintenance
  • Work on the seawalls and structures

Operational constraints at the airport often require that works are carried out during the flight curfew (1am to 6am). We are mindful of the close proximity of residents to Wellington Airport, and our procedures require noise mitigation measures to be planned and implemented for all projects.

We have a detailed Construction Noise Management Plan which outlines procedures and strategies we use for this.

Construction Works

Below is a list of works we are currently working on at the airport. We apologise in advance for any inconvenience this work may cause.

Remedial maintenance work

We have regular construction and maintenance works underway including general pavement maintenance, lighting maintenance and airside mowing.

This work needs to occur at night due to operational restraints and may create some noise audible to local residents. It will be carried out from Sunday to Thursday nights (weather dependent).

Our project team and contractors will take all steps possible to minimise noise disruption during these works. This includes:

  • Undertaking the nosiest work at the beginning of shifts
  • Using the most efficient equipment
  • Noise screens where possible to shield machinery during operation
  • Ongoing communication with site crews to avoid unnecessary noise during the works

Car park seismic resilience work

Seismic resilience work on the mezzanine level of our carpark continues to make great progress. This area is to the south of the multi-level carparking building.

This work needs to occur at night for traffic and pedestrian safety reasons and will involve the use of potentially noisy hand tools.

The total project may take up to 18 months, however, the use of noisy hand tools is only expected to occur over 15 nights throughout the duration of the project. Also noting that due to the quick rate of progress the highest noise level experienced by each property will only be for a short period before the works move further away.

The map below shows the area where the works will be undertaken:

Our project team and contractors will take all steps possible to minimise noise disruption during these works. This includes:

  • Undertaking the nosiest work at the beginning of shifts; and
  • Ongoing communication with site crews to avoid unnecessary noise during the works.

East Side Area redevelopment

In 2019 Wellington Airport purchased the land covering the southern half (back nine holes) of the Miramar Golf Course. Over the next few years, we will gradually start using parts of this land for much needed development. This land will be developed for airport purposes in stages over time as required. We are not intending to fully develop this area for aircraft parking at this stage.

New Temporary Carpark

During 2024 the Airport has been planning, designing and obtaining the relevant consents for the creation of a new carpark to accommodate parking capacity displaced from other parts of the airport precinct, including Wellington City Council’s Sludge Minimisation Wastewater Treatment Plant.

Preliminary works: September 2024 – Early works started with groundwork and initial site setup.

Major construction starts: October 2024 —Crews will be on-site from October as we commence the project.

Project completion: The temporary carpark is expected to be operational in April or May 2025.

What to Expect During Construction

The temporary carpark earthworks and construction is expected to take place between the hours of 7am – 6pm Monday to Saturday. We will notify the local community If we need to complete work outside of these hours for any reason.

Our project team and contractors will continue to minimise noise and disruption to our community during these works. This includes using the most efficient equipment and machinery during operation, ongoing communication with the site crews to avoid unnecessary noise during the works, and not undertaking any noisy works prior to 7:30am.

New Airport Fire Station in Rongotai

We are building a new Airport Fire Station on Coutts Street in Rongotai, moving across from the existing facility on the eastern side of the runway. Work is happening during the day only and we are keeping neighbours updated on progress.
